This morning (Or afternoon, really) I was listening to a quite brilliant podcast by Conrad Rice and Suzanne on characterization, which can be found here: http://twoswordsonepen.wordpress.com/2010/06/22/episode-2-characters/#comments. Check it out writers ;)

How to kill a word

Twilight. That word gave you an image of sparkly vampires, right?

What is the world coming to? Twilight has been killed. Its real meaning;

twi·light

the soft, diffused light from the sky when the sun is below the horizon, either from daybreak to sunrise or, more commonly, from sunset to nightfall.

Dictionary.com

Some people absolutely love Twilight. Sure, that’s fine. Run off with Cedric the sparkling vampire. But the traditional word twilight and its meaning has been killed.

But twilight isn’t the only word that has been killed. Oh no. I don’t know about other countries, but in Australia, certain things are considered random. Oh, yeah. There’s a whole list of words and they’re the random words. Even though the fact that they aren’t so random anymore defies the use of the word.

Penguins, tacos, pineapples, moo cows. Just to name a few. Someone shouts across the school yard, “HUGE CHOCOLATE TACOS WITH CONFETTI AND WEDDING CAKE ON TOP!”

Another person replies, “THAT WAS RANDOM!”

Heh heh. Nooooo.

Don’t get caught in the crowd, people. Get out there and whatever you do, do not kill words or use those that are already dead.  I’m begging you.
